The plumbing industry is more interesting than the average person thinks. Plumbing systems are an intricate part of society. There are a lot of interesting plumbing facts out there! A lot more than we give credit to! In an effort to give thanks for all that plumbers do, we felt compelled to compile a list of some little known and interesting plumbing facts.

Plumbing Fact # 1: Old Plumbing


  • The first flushing toilet was found in Crete, in the palace of King Minus dating back to 1500 B.C.
  • The name “Plumber” is derived from the Latin word “plumbum” meaning lead. Dating back to Roman times where many pipes were made from lead.
  • Ancient Egyptians also used copper to lay their pipe work as well; almost 3,000 years ago!
  • Many plumbing pipes were made of wood in the 16th and 17th centuries
  • The nickname “John” is derived from Sir John Harrington, who is credited with inventing the very first flush toilet in 1596.

  • Copper is the number one material used in plumbing work today.
  • Since 1963 more than 5.3 million miles of copper tubing has been used in the US! Enough to wrap around the circumference of the globe more than 200 times!

Plumbing Fact # 2: Water

  • Did you know that the water usage of an average home is 38% flushing toilets?  That being said low flow toilets can save over 18,000 gallons of water per year!
  • Households waste thousands of gallons of water every year while waiting for water to heat up from faucets and showerheads, almost 9,000 gallons of water is wasted per year, per household!
  • Drip, drip, drip! A leaky shower head or faucet can waste up to 100 or more gallons of water per week!
