With Labor Day weekend fast approaching and the children going back to school, Fall is only eminent. You may have already began to notice the weather starting to change, the leaves starting to turn deep hues of orange, red, and brown, or the lighting getting softer in the latter afternoon. Fall is just around the corner and so is cooler weather and family get togethers. This is the perfect time of year to perform some routine maintenance on your heating and plumbing system. Its just before heavy usage and all the craziness associated with the holidays. Preventative maintenance is the best way to prevent a disaster from striking, especially when you need your heating and plumbing system the most. Here we bring your the Fall heating and plumbing checklist.

Heating System

With summer coming to a close, its always a good idea to have you heater system inspected before the temperatures drop and you need it most. A well maintained heating system will last longer, run more efficiently, and

will have less of a chance of breaking down. You don’t want to be caught in the middle of a winter storm with a broken heater, so get a head of the crowds and have your heating system inspected early. A thorough inspection of your heating system will include:

  • Checking for any leaks
  • Ensuring there are no fire or safety hazards
  • Replacing old worn parts
  • Cleaning of system or buildup and debris
  • Checking thermostat to ensure it is working correctly

Aside from having your heating system inspected and serviced you may also want to consider having your ducts cleaned. Over time dust and other debris can buildup in your ducting which blows right out of the vents when you run the AC or heater. To prevent sickness and allergies and to help your system run more efficiently its a good idea to have your ducts cleaned and serviced once a year. This will also include changing out the air filters.

Routine plumbing maintenance is also important. Its true you don’t really give much thought to your plumbing system until you have a major plumbing disaster. However this shouldn’t be the case. Most plumbing disasters can actually be prevented with proper plumbing maintenance. As part of your Fall routine maintenance for your plumbing system you should check the following:

  • Check for leaks under the sink or behind the toilet
  • Inspect faucets and showerheads for any drips
  • Inspect any pipes that are exposed to the elements for any damage
  • Make sure your pipes that are exposed are properly insulted, especially if you live in an area where temperatures drop below freezing
  • Check for any openings or cracks that can allow cold air to penetrate along the foundation of your home and attic space. When temperatures drop cold air can cause frozen pipes and also make your home less efficient
  • Check your water heater for any signs of corrosion and check the temperature gauge
