July 28th, 2019 by gtowsley Leave a reply »

An email campaign is a natural part of any good marketing plan. Some think email marketing isn’t that effective, however that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, email open rates have steadily increased every year for the last 5 years. When it comes to reaching your audience, it is best to have a diversified plan. Some people respond well to social media, some like video content, some read your blog, and others like emails. After all you don’t want to put all of your eggs in one basket right? You want to cast a wide net, and appeal to everyone. With that being said, getting people to open your emails can be a bit of a challenge. Everyday people are bombarded with information from all angles, social media, paid ads, emails…. There is a lot of information to sift through and process. So how do you stand out? Here’s how to increase the open rate for your email campaign.

Know Your Audience

Aside from trying to increase the open rate for your email campaign, you should always know your audience when it comes to your marketing efforts. What kind of information are they interested in? People like good quality content that is relevant and useful to them. If you are simply slapping an email together for the sake of it, that could be why your open rates are so low. Focus on mind blowing content, even if it means you decrease your frequency, in this case quality trumps quantity.

Don’t Be Afraid to Cull Your Subscriber List

This may sound a little harsh, but if your audience isn’t right, and they are consistently not opening your emails, it may be time to remove them. Check your open rates, are there any subscribers who haven’t opened any emails? Remove those subscribers, to help you get a better return on your investment.

Optimize for Mobile

Over 60% of all emails are opened on mobile devices, so if your email doesn’t convert for the smaller screen it could be winding up in the spam folder. People aren’t going to waste their time opening an email that doesn’t fit on their screen and are more likely to delete it upon opening it. Everything is on mobile these days, so make sure your emails are converting accordingly.

Craft The Right Subject Line

In order to increase the open rate for your email campaign, you need to craft a steller subject line. This is the first thing people see, and influences over 47% of people to actually open any given email. The subject line is not something you want to through together, give it some careful thought and consideration. Make sure it is the right length, not to short, not to long, 6-10 word is best.

What’s In a Name?

People are more likely to open an email from someone vs. a company name. It’s just more personal. In fact over 65% of emails get opened because the sender’s name. In addition, if you can incorporate the recipients name into the email using CRM, you can increase your by as much as 20%.

Timing is Everything

When trying to increase the open rate for your email campaign, timing is everything. For example, people are more likely to open emails mid week, Mondays can be crazy and people tend to check out on the weekend. The best day of the week with the highest open rates is Tuesday. And the best time of day is around 3pm. In addition, you could also increase your open rates, by sending your email twice, perhaps your some of your audience was busy when you sent your initial email, a follow up send can help increase the likelihood that they open your email.
