plumbing, diseases ran rampant in many civilizations. Let’s look at how modern plumbing has impacted disease ratification.

Before modern plumbing was developed, indoor facilities were primitive at best. A washstand, chamber pot or commode offered all the modern conveniences at the time. Human waste was thrown out into the streets which lead to extremely unsanitary conditions. In heavily populated urban areas, where rats and other vermin ran rampant, disease spread quickly. The black plague alone took out nearly 200 million people. Proper removal of waste water was instrumental in preventing many diseases.

Cholera was widespread in London during the mid-1800’s claiming 10s of thousands of lives. Medical professionals at the time believed that bad vapors were the leading culprit. It wasn’t until a man named Dr. Snow questioned this widespread thought. Instead, Dr. Snow believed the cholera outbreak was directly related to the water supply. During this time, it was common practice to disperse of waste in large pits known as cesspools or directly into the Thames river. Contamination of clean drinking water was inevitable. This was the basis for Dr. Snow’s theory, and under further investigation he proved that contamination of clean water with waste water the direct reason for the cholera outbreak.

Polio, dysentery, typhoid fever, and many other diseases are spread through unsanitary treatment of wastewater. Proper plumbing infrastructure is needed to prevent cross contamination and to properly dispose of waste water. Clean water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing is another huge benefit to modern plumbing and helps promote good health and hygiene.

The sad truth is that half of the world’s population is without clean water and proper water sanitation plants. Bringing modern plumbing to under developed nations is crucial for preventing disease. There are many foundations that are dedicated to bringing modern plumbing infrastructure to less fortunate areas. World Plumbing Day is one group working to make a difference.
