2018 Year in Review and What’s Ahead for Digital Marketing in 2019

digital marketingWith 2018 coming to a close, and 2019 looming in the future, now is as good a time as any for a little annual review. The end of the year is the perfect time to reflect on your successes, achievements, and even failures with your digital marketing strategy. This provides valuable insights, as you start to shape your strategy for next year.

 

Measuring Your Success

In any endeavor it is important to measure your success. Especially when it comes to your digital marketing strategy. One way to measure your success is by consulting your analytics report. Analytics reports provide a wealth of information from keywords, traffic sources, bounce rates, click throughs, and conversions. Some things to ask yourself?

 

  • Which sites provided the most referrals?
  • Which keywords performed the best?
  • What content was the most popular?
  • What was the average time spent on your website?
  • Did people follow through with your call to action?

 

These are all important questions to ask because they will help you decide which areas you should allocate more time and money to in the next year. The idea is to take what works well, and duplicate it.

 

Achievements

When it comes to your digital marketing strategy, it is important to have goals in mind. Short term and long term. Your short term goals would be goals you can achieve on a digital marketing monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. Long term goals would be goals that are in 2-5 years. If done correctly, your short term goals will lead to your long term goals. What goals did you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? Where you able to achieve your goals? Part of reflecting on your year, is recognizing your achievements. Where your goals too easy? Where your goals to unrealistic? It is important to set attainable and realistic goals. End of year analysis of where you are in terms of your goals can help you adjust your goals moving forward. Remember, nothing is set in stone. Make sure you leave room to adapt and change your goals as needed.

 

Overcoming Failures

When it comes to digital marketing, it’s not a one size fits all situation. What works for one business, might not work well for the next. While it is important to experiment and see what works, it is also important to note what works and what doesn’t work. One of the biggest blessings is what we can learn from our failures. Recognizing and learning from your failures allows you to adapt, overcome, and improvise with your digital marketing strategy next year.

 

What’s Ahead

This year we saw a climb in voice search, next year there will probably be even more of an emphasis on voice search. Which means, optimizing your content with keywords and phrases that are in line with how people are searching using voice search. Interactive content, filters, and short video clips like you see with stories will also gain more traction moving into the new year.
